Near East and North Africa: Recent Events in Egypt and Tunisia
The Near East and North Africa Regional Policy Overview has been updated with a statement from the White House encouraging Egypt to pursue political, economic, and social reforms in response to the current protests, State Department releases on Egypt and Lebanon and on the Secretary of State's call to the Tunisian Prime Minister, a Council on Foreign Relations article analyzing the regional implications of the recent events in Tunisia, remarks by a State Department official at a United Nations Security Council debate on the Middle East, publications from the Washington Institute for Near East Policy assessing the political challenges facing Tunisia, evaluating the intersection between the crisis in Gaza and the ability of Hamas to increase its funding, and providing land swap scenarios and recommendations for the solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and a Brookings Institution report examining political violence in North Africa.
