Bureau of Consular Affairs to Hold Hurricane Preparedness Workshop in Washington, June 1

Office of the Spokesman
Washington, DC

May 28, 2010

In line with the President’s direction that federal agencies prepare for the hurricane season, the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs will hold a hurricane preparedness workshop at the U.S. Department of State on June 1, 2010.

The 2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season begins June 1 and ends November 30. Among the highest priorities of the Department of State is the safety and security of U.S. citizens overseas. Every year, the possibility of hurricanes threatens the welfare of U.S. citizens living or vacationing in parts of Mexico, Central America, and in the Caribbean.

This annual workshop brings together Department of State, other U.S. government, and foreign embassy officials responsible for responding to hurricanes overseas. Consular officers from U.S. embassies and consulates in Grenada, Jamaica, Bermuda, Barbados, Belize, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, and the Bahamas will participate via video conferencing. Participants will discuss the 2010 hurricane forecast, past lessons learned, current response plans, and how to most effectively alert U.S. citizens abroad of any hurricane threat through social media and web 2.0 technologies.

Following the workshop, Michelle Bernier-Toth, Director of American Citizens Services and Crisis Management, will take press questions on the record via conference call at 3:00 pm EST on June 1.

The conference call-in numbers are toll-free at 888-381-5775 or toll at 1-517-308-9106. The participant passcode is HURRICANE.

Please direct any further inquiries to the Bureau of Consular Affairs, Office of Policy Coordination and Public Affairs at (202) 647-1488. More information regarding hurricane preparedness is available at http://travel.state.gov. The State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs has hosted an annual Hurricane Workshop since 2006.
