Hoyer Statement on Memorial Day

WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of Memorial Day, observed Monday, May 31:

“This Monday, we observe Memorial Day to honor the generations of brave men and women who lost their lives in our country’s service, from America’s founding up to the present day. In each generation, they bore pain and sacrifice so that those they left at home would not have to; we owe our country’s safety and its liberties to their courage.

“As we remember the dead, we also call to mind with gratitude the Americans serving in our Armed Forces today, in Iraq, in Afghanistan, and around the world. We pray for their safe return and pledge to keep faith with them, and with all veterans, when they return. I am proud that the House just passed a Defense Authorization bill that makes significant investments in the safety of our troops overseas, and in their families, education, and health care after their service is done. Memorial Day reminds us that the bond between America and its troops and veterans is, and must be, unbreakable.”
