South and Central Asia: Establishment of a Commission to Evaluate the Recently Ended Conflict in Sri Lanka
The South and Central Asia Regional Policy Overview has been updated with a Naval War College Review article evaluating the prospects for strategic arms restraint and confidence-building measures to improve relations between Pakistan and India, an International Crisis Group report examining evidence that both the Sri Lankan government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) committed war crimes, a White House press briefing by the Commander of U.S. Forces in Afghanistan and the U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan, a statement by the U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations welcoming the establishment of a commission to evaluate the recently ended conflict in Sri Lanka, a Congressional Research Service report with an overview of the April 2010 coup in Kyrgyzstan and its implications for U.S. interests, a Carnegie Endowment for International Peace report assessing the potential suitability of a regional strategy towards Afghanistan, and a RAND Corporation report outlining policy options for the pursuit of U.S. interests in Pakistan, analyzing Pakistan's security environment and capacity to handle security threats, and assessing likely developments in Pakistan's internal and external security environments in the next decade.
