Secretary Clinton Congratulates Jordan on 64 Years of Independence

Congratulations to the people of Jordan on marking 64 years of independence. This is a chance to celebrate the richness of your history and the promise of your future. The United States is proud of our six decades of diplomatic relations and of the dynamic partnership between our countries.

The bonds between our nations have been forged through shared hopes for peace, security, and stability in the Middle East and throughout the world. And our ties have only been deepened by the resilience that both of our peoples have shown in response to terrorist attacks on our respective lands. I will never forget the courage of the survivors and families I met in Amman after that terrible wedding bombing in 2005. And I will always remember the inspiration that I felt watching the late King Hussein sign a treaty that ended decades of war with Israel in 1994. Today, the United States applauds Jordan’s support of the Arab Peace Initiative and the leadership offered by King Abdullah. This offers a vision of a better future for all of the people of the Middle East, and it is so important that you continue to demonstrate the dividends of peace.

Your country is a model of tolerance and stability, and on this 64th anniversary, I wish you all the best. This is, of course, a historic occasion, but it’s more about the future: the future of your country and the future of your children and I wish you the very, very best.
