Hoyer Statement on Earth Day

WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the 40th anniversary of Earth Day:

“For 40 years, Earth Day has challenged Americans to exercise responsible stewardship over the natural environment. The challenge of Earth Day and the environmental movement has inspired countless Americans to take steps to reduce their impact on the planet, from recycling to driving more efficient cars. And it has inspired some of the most important legislation of our time, from the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts, to efforts to strengthen America’s energy independence and create green jobs.

“I’m glad to see that environmental stewardship is a top priority of the Obama Administration: the Recovery Act invests $80 billion in clean energy and energy efficiency, saving consumers money and creating jobs. And yesterday, Vice President Biden announced $452 million in Recovery Act funding to help hundreds of thousands of businesses and homeowners make their buildings more energy efficient. In this case, as in so many others, energy efficiency makes sense both for the environment and for our economy.”
