Hoyer Statement on Memorial Day
WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of Memorial Day, observed on Monday, May 27:
“Each year on Memorial Day, we remember the courageous individuals who gave all they had to protect our nation and the values that sustain our democracy. In every generation, Americans have been called to take up arms in defense of the rights and freedoms we hold dear – not only for ourselves but for others who yearn for peace, justice, and liberty around the world.
“Today, we continue to honor the memory of America’s fallen, from the quiet fields of Antietam to the soaring cliffs of Pointe du Hoc, among Arlington Cemetery’s stately rows, and in communities throughout our country. As we do so, we also thank our veterans and the members of our Armed Forces who continue to serve in harms’ way in Afghanistan and around the world. Their dedication, bravery and service inspires us all, and we must ensure they have not only every resource they need to complete their missions and transition to civilian life after their service, but also the support of a grateful nation.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the families of America’s fallen, and I join in honoring the service and sacrifice of all those who gave their lives to preserve our republic, and the rights and opportunities it guarantees, for generations to come.”
