Ensuring a Fair and Efficient Asylum Process for Unaccompani

Postby admin » Fri Sep 21, 2012 11:24 am

Today, the Department of Homeland Security Office of the Citizenship and Immigration Services Ombudsman released a formal recommendation entitled, “Ensuring a Fair and Efficient Asylum Process for Unaccompanied Children.” This document reviews the handling by USCIS of asylum claims filed by a uniquely at-risk population. It highlights current problems including USCIS’ policy of redetermining UAC status, difficulty rescheduling UAC interviews, inadequate interview methods and approaches, and a general misunderstanding of the roles and responsibilities of certain adults associated with UACs. The Ombudsman's Office looks forward to working with USCIS to overcome identified procedural, informational and training barriers to ensure the timely, appropriate processing of asylum cases for vulnerable children.
Sincerely,
Office of the Citizenship and Immigration Services Ombudsman
