WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- U.S. holdings of foreign securities increased last year, even as holdings of equities and short-term securities decreased, according to Treasury Department data released Friday. Total holdings of foreign securities rose to $6.84 trillion in 2011 from $6.76 trillion in 2010, as long-term debt rose to $1.98 trillion from $1.72 billion. Equity holdings fell to $4.5 trillion from $4.65 trillion, and short-term debt securities fell to $360 billion from $402 billion. The top destination of U.S. holdings are the United Kingdom, Canada and the Cayman Islands, the latter a domicile for many private-equity and hedge funds.
