Canadian stocks gain on robust bank earnings
from MarketWatch.com - MarketPulse
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Canadian stocks edged higher Tuesday in choppy trading as gains in financial shares offset selling pressure from energy and mining sectors. The S&P/TSX Composite Index added 7.85 points to 12,056.67 points. Financial stocks were bolstered after Bank of Montreal and Bank of Nova Scotia reported stronger earnings. Bank of Montreal said its third-quarter earnings rose 37% to 970 million Canadian dollars (US $979 million) and raised its quarterly dividend. Bank of Nova Scotia also delivered robust third-quarter earnings and announced a dividend hike.
