Hoyer Statement On Anniversary of Medicare Being Signed Into Law

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on the 47th anniversary of Medicare being signed into law, which is today:
“Forty-seven years ago today, Medicare brought the promise of affordable health care for Americans over age 65. Since that day, Democrats have defended that promise and worked to strengthen Medicare for future generations. The landmark Affordable Care Act extended the solvency of the Medicare Trust Fund by eight years and has lowered out-of-pocket costs to beneficiaries by closing the ‘donut hole’ for prescription drug coverage and making a range of preventive care services free.
“In spite of all the good Medicare has done over the years, House Republicans remain intent on turning back the clock. Their budgets for fiscal years 2012 and 2013 would end Medicare as we know it and raise costs for seniors, and they have now voted over thirty times to defund or repeal the Affordable Care Act and its provisions strengthening Medicare. As Republicans continue their assault on seniors, Democrats will continue to stand up for them and the affordable care they deserve by defending Medicare.”
