Hoyer Statement on OMB’s Mid-Session Review

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after the Office of Managment and Budget released its Mid-Session Review today:
“Today’s Mid-Session Review by the Office of Management and Budget tell us what we already know – that we must get our deficits under control. The way to achieve that is by pursuing a big and balanced deficit reduction solution this year, as both the President and House Democrats proposed in our budgets.
“Congress has a responsibility to act before the painful and arbitrary spending cuts of the budget sequester – the result of the so-called super committee’s failure to agree to balanced deficit reduction – take effect in January. If they were to take effect, the results would be devastating for both our national security and the many domestic programs upon which the most vulnerable Americans rely each day. The only way to avoid the sequester taking effect is to replace it with a big and balanced plan to bring deficits down. That way, we can afford the investments our country must make to help our private sector grow and create jobs. I agree with the OMB’s assessment that those investments must be paid for in a way that gives all Americans a ‘fair shot’ and asks all Americans to ‘pay their fair share.’
“I believe we can get our fiscal house in order and that we must do so. That’s why I continue to call on House Republicans to work with Democrats to achieve a solution to deficits that can avert the sequester and set us back on a sound fiscal path, while strengthening our economy and getting more Americans back to work.”
